BLACK LAVA PAVILION

Submission to Bee Breeders Competition

A visitor’s center at the Dimmuborgir Lava Fields would be both an educational hub and a peaceful rest stop. A building in such a geologically sensitive site should be small and converge with the the surrounding terrain. Existing trails could be extended onto a traversable roof, giving visitors more dramatic views of the Hverfjall Volcano and over its lava fields.

The arrival experience recalls the flow of lava through these original marshlands: a continuous driving and walking surface flows through the landscape, into the main entrance of the building, and connects to the main trailhead along the way.

Concrete shells create interior volumes like lava rock with sculptured views into the landscape.

A great geothermal and environmental opportunity.
